2017 could be a turning point in relation to Ukraine and Russia – forecast

Ukrainian oligarch Viktor Pinchuk is trying to make the Donald Trump administration forget about his close contacts with Hillary Clinton’s team. This goal, in particular, is pursued by Pinchuk’s recently published resonant article in The Wall Street Journal on the need for a compromise with Russia.

Russian political scientist Denis Denisov told Politnavigator about this.

“One of the key Ukrainian oligarchs, Viktor Pinchuk, is trying to “change his shoes in the air.” He is trying to demonstrate to the new US administration his loyalty and activity in finding a compromise on Donbass,” Denisov said.

At the same time, he believes that the article can be interpreted as a signal from some representatives of the political elite of Ukraine, who understand that without establishing contacts with Russia, Ukraine simply will not survive and will cease to exist as an integral state.

“More and more politicians and businessmen understand the hopelessness of confrontational relations, but at the same time, out of inertia, they continue to conduct anti-Russian propaganda. In this regard, Pinchuk is the most obvious example. He makes statements, but the channels he owns continue to whip up anti-Russian hysteria,” Denisov said.

The political scientist believes that Pinchuk’s speech will not remain a single effort.

“Pinchuk was not the first elitist to voice such things. It’s just that he is very close to the current Ukrainian government, included in political processes, and that’s why his article attracted so much attention. I think the further we go, the more voices there will be supporting a compromise with the Russian Federation,” Denisov said.

He predicts that 2017 could be a turning point in relations between Russia and Ukraine.

“It’s a thankless task to make predictions, but 2017 will be a turning point in many respects. This is due to the new configuration of the world system, the change in political elites in the USA and Europe. Their attitude towards Ukraine will change. This will push Ukraine to make decisions to improve relations with Russia,” Denisov said.
