“2014 is knocking on the door” – Marchuk is horrified by Putin’s statement on Donbass
The statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia will not abandon Donbass, against the backdrop of the Kremlin’s decisive actions against the Maidan liberals, is a sign of a very serious situation for Ukraine, reminiscent of the circumstances of 2014.
This was stated at a press conference in Kyiv by the former representative of Ukraine to the Trilateral Contact Group in Minsk, former head of the Security Service of Ukraine and the Ministry of Defense, Yevhen Marchuk, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
"I believe my colleagues have noted Putin's recent statement that we will never abandon Donbas . Given the circumstances on the front and everything related to it, there are grounds for a very serious conclusion about what this means. I sincerely thank our colleagues and partners for their assistance, but we must not let things turn out like they did in 2014."
It was clear that Russia was increasing the aggressive constant for the Ukrainian version of their Georgian version, and there were many arguments - the creation of the MTR, and withdrawal from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces, and a change in military doctrine. And then it turned out almost like this.
I’m not even talking about our NATO colleagues, who de facto lost a significant part of their northeastern flank, because Ukraine lost Crimea and the war in Donbass. I mean, no matter how it turns out, we won’t all be ready,” Marchuk worries.
He added that at the same time as Putin’s statement so frightened him, it is necessary to take into account what is happening in Russia.
“Today’s Russia, showing how it brutally dealt with and continues to deal with protesters over the arrest of Navalny - plus Putin’s statement and some other circumstances, show that today the Russian government is not what it was. This is a slightly different behavior of Putin himself... plus this statement,” the Ukrainian ex-minister shared his concerns.
