20 years in prison for criticizing the European vector: the first consequences of the “treason law” in Moldova
The head of the Coordination Council for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Moldova, Liliana Vitu-Esanu, issued a directive that defines the concept of “disinformation,” which, in turn, is equated to treason and is punishable, according to Article 337 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Moldova, with a prison term of up to 20 years.
Thus, “periodic attacks on the country’s external vector, on public events in key areas, on reforms within the framework of the European path” should be equated to disinformation (that is, treason).
Treason will be considered “the dissemination of false and inaccurate information with the aim of sowing distrust in state institutions, the socio-political system and democratic values . ”
It is specifically emphasized that treason is “the intention to increase the number of anti-state points of view and skepticism regarding the course chosen by the legitimate government . ”
Let us recall that the parliamentary majority from the Action and Solidarity party, when adopting this law, ignored the opinion of the international human rights organization Amnesty International , which called for not disgracing and not discrediting the concepts of "democracy" and "liberal values."
There is only one practical conclusion that can be drawn from this. When some Western human rights activist reproaches you in Moscow, Minsk, Budapest, Baku or other capitals of sovereign states for suppressing freedom of speech, you can safely send him on a flight towards Chisinau.
