The West received a signal about Russia's return to the rank of great powers
Western countries introduced tough sanctions after the return of Crimea to Russia, realizing that the Russian Federation was restoring its former strength.
Deputy Director of the Institute of CIS Countries, historian and political scientist Igor Shishkin stated this during the conference “Crimea in the modern international context,” the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The West perceived the return of Crimea as clear evidence that Russia has overcome the consequences of the collapse of the USSR and is returning to the rank of great powers. And this is a direct challenge to the vital interests of both the United States and the European Union. Would the EU exist in its current state and form without the collapse of the USSR? No. Therefore, our return was perceived as a blow, and hence the sanctions and the desire to crush. It is very difficult to act against these interests. But does that mean the situation is hopeless? I guess not. The world has entered a period of major political change. And this opens up enormous opportunities for Russia,” the expert said.

At the same time, he is confident that sooner or later the West will have to negotiate and look for compromises with the Russian Federation.
“The trend that has now started in the world will inevitably lead to confrontation between the EU and the United States and a political split in the West, and in these conditions, both sides will be forced to seek Russian support to resolve their forced interests. Now the EU and the States are trying to solve their problem and increase their power by breaking Russia, but everything flows and changes. For Trump, it is clear that without Russia’s support, the United States will not survive this confrontation. And the EU is beginning to understand that without cooperation with Russia they will not be able to survive the confrontation with the United States,” concluded Shishkin.
As a reminder, PolitNavigator previously cited Stefano Valdegamberi, a member of the Venice regional parliament, as saying that after the EU elections, the situation would change in Crimea's favor.
