“The result of the unsuccessful and incompetent policy of the current government, which in our situation has led to the fact that the Ukrainian issue is moving from the top, as they say, of world politics. And this, of course, first of all, must be considered this way.
On the other hand, you need to understand that there are many forces in world politics and - let’s not deceive ourselves - including in Europe, not all, but many, would be happy to quickly forget about Ukraine and Russian aggression. They want to do business as usual, they want to continue trading with Russia, and here Ukraine should set an example.
The Ukrainian government should set an example of sanctions against the aggressor country, should show that we are the “locomotive” of these sanctions. But in a situation where our trade turnover with the “aggressor country” is growing, especially over the last year, it is very difficult to go and tell Western countries to stop doing this.
It’s very difficult to stop Nord Stream 2 or similar things if we have Russian business and if diplomatic relations with the aggressor country have been maintained,” Ilyenko said.
“This sitting on two chairs results in the fact that it is difficult for us to defend our position in the external arena. The position must be tough, and it must be supported by real deeds, not just words. And I believe that when there is a real patriotic government in Ukraine, we will be able to continue to defend our national interests in the external arena,” the people’s deputy added.
