“These 23 years are years of lost opportunities that led to Kyiv speaking Russian. As a result, Kyiv acts as a Russifier for the whole of Ukraine,” Semistyaga laments in an interview with the Den newspaper.
He noted that even “hawks” prefer to flirt with the Russian electorate - by switching to Russian during trips to Donbass, or by speaking a mixture of two languages.
“And Yulia Vladimirovna, and many others... I will give you an example. I am meeting with Anatoly Gritsenko, who switched to Russian in the Donbass... Open the legislation and read - a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada is equal to a civil servant and must speak and use the Ukrainian language, and not so that he came to Donbass and switched to Russian. How long can this go on? - Semystyaga is indignant.
“I think that it is necessary to immediately pass laws on citizenship, according to which, in order to become a citizen of Ukraine, one must learn the Ukrainian language, learn Ukrainian legislation and learn Ukrainian history, as is done in all other countries. What is happening today in Donbass is a clear example of nihilism. I am the chairman of Prosvita and sometimes people come to me and ask: is “chervoniy” brown? They don’t know the names of flowers in Ukrainian! And all this illiteracy is due to the fact that these issues are basically leveled out by legislation. Why, for example, should the names of each railway station be duplicated in Russian? If you want to go to Europe, dub it in English. In banks, accounting is done in Russian. You go to a housing office, a repair shop, a university - Russian is the language everywhere. This is about state policy,” says the Ukrainian patriot.
