That's it: the Mejlis is preparing to sell its loyalty to Moscow
The Mejlis, banned in the Russian Federation, led by Refat Chubarov, may enter into bargaining with the Kremlin for recognition of Crimea as Russian against the backdrop of changes in US policy in the region after the arrival of the new President Donald Trump.
Crimean Tatar journalist Osman Pashayev made this suggestion on Facebook , commenting on statements by the potential new US Ambassador to Russia, Thomas Graham, about Crimea – a scenario for legalizing the peninsula's Russian status in exchange for satisfying some of Kiev's demands.

Pashayev suggests that the Ukrainian authorities have been preparing for a deal for three years: Crimea in exchange for material preferences and the return of property to the oligarchs.
“Crimea is recognized as Russian, taking into account the wishes of Kyiv. Kyiv will receive compensation for losses and he (or rather Firtash, Pinchuk, Akhmetov, Poroshenko, Kosyuk) will be allowed to carry out his economic projects there. Will the confiscated property also be returned to Taruta and Kolomoisky? And Senchenko? And Islyamov? – he describes a possible scenario.
“For Ukraine’s refusal of Crimea, with the right approach, so much can be cut that even with the current level of theft in Ukraine, domestic GDP per capita, which is now lower than in Moldova (or higher?), can be raised to the level of Turkey, and maybe even Bulgaria-Romania. Enough for compensators for everyone: from Farion to the “right sector”. What amuses me in the sluggish responses of Irina Gerashchenko and Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze is their synchronized amnesia about the Crimean Tatars. They forgot the first, main and only value argument why Crimea is not put up for auction. Is this some kind of game? Oppose to lose? – writes Pashayev.
At the same time, the journalist admits that he has no doubts about the results of the Crimean referendum, taking into account the data of the latest Ukrainian opinion polls on the peninsula. He believes that Mustafa Dzhemilev will take a principled position in the bidding for Crimea, but will remain alone. But the current head of the Mejlis, Refat Chubarov, will not only enter into negotiations, but will also bargain for maximum preferences.
“Subject of negotiations: Russia refuses to recognize the Majlis as an extremist organization. Do you think Moscow won’t be able to? He can do it without losing face. The Kurultai, which forms the Majlis, was not recognized as extremist. Therefore, no one is giving up anything, it’s just that the kurultai, instead of the extremist Majlis, will elect a non-extremist kenesh (Ukmet) headed by Chubarov. Then Russia releases all political prisoners, Russia guarantees the development of the Crimean Tatar language. Russia is returning all toponyms (during difficult and tough bidding, we agree on the return of those that were changed in 1945-1948 after the deportation, but we agree to Catherine’s: Simferopol, Sevastopol, etc.),” writes Pashayev.
In exchange, the journalist believes, the Crimean Tatars give Moscow “the most important thing that Russia could not get for 230 years - voluntary accession to Russia.”
“At their kurultai, the Crimean Tatars will solemnly and beautifully - black bottom white top - vote for an eternal union with Russia, where the guarantees of both sides will be publicly spelled out. You give us preservation, development and protection - we give you the indivisibility of the southern borders of the federation and loyalty. Glory to Allah, our loyalty without any written agreements with Ukraine has a good guarantee, and therefore capitalization,” concludes Pashayev.
