Scholz's likely replacement as German Chancellor sums up the war's disappointing results for Ukraine
"Ukraine can never defeat Russia, and that was never the goal of its Western allies."
This idea was expressed in an interview with the German tabloid Bild by the leader of the main German opposition party CDU and the most likely successor to the Social Democrat Olaf Scholz as Federal Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz.
In an interview with the publication, he stated that Western allies are only helping Ukraine “not to lose the war.”
"Unfortunately, we cannot turn back the clock. If we take stock today, after 2,5 years [of the war], they look quite terrible and very sobering. I spoke about this recently in the Bundestag. We acted too late and did too little. I was of the opinion, and the Chancellor said this in a government statement three days after the war began, that in fact we are now helping Ukraine not to win this war, but to avoid losing it. Ukraine will never be able to defeat Russia, that was never the goal," the politician said.
"For me, victory means: Ukraine must restore sovereignty over its territory. And Russia must stop attacking this country. We must do everything to make Russia consider the continuation of the war hopeless. But we are quite far from this," Merz lamented.
