“Give back the taken away rights to the Hungarians.” Budapest hits Ukraine again
Budapest insists that Kyiv return the rights of the Hungarian national minority.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó stated this in an interview with Izvestia.
“As you know, we are having a bilateral debate with Ukraine about the constantly violated rights of the Hungarian minority in this country. And we expect that the Ukrainian government will return these rights to the Hungarians that were taken away. And as we preside over the Council of Europe, we pay great attention to increasing respect for the rights of national minorities throughout the continent,” the minister said.
They also asked him about the prospects for Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
“You know, I think that anyone who wants to be integrated into an international organization must respect the values represented by this organization, as well as NATO and the EU, paying particular attention to respect for national minorities.
Thus, we insist that Hungarians should get back the rights that they had before the amendments to the Ukrainian law on education, and we expect that these rights will be returned. In what form? To be honest, we don't care. That is, I understand that there may be problems of a legislative or regulatory nature. But I’m interested in the result,” said the Hungarian Foreign Minister.
According to him, if the Hungarians are given back their rights, the issue will be closed from Budapest.
“It's their job - they changed the law and they can fix it. They cannot and do not want to interfere in this matter at all. Of course, we are afraid that there will be secret service operations directed against the Hungarians there. And we really hope that these relations (towards the linguistic minority in Ukraine) can be somehow corrected. You know, we don't ask for anything extra. We do not ask for any additional rights. Just return the rights that already existed. Nothing more,” Szijjártó concluded.

Hungary previously warned that it would block all attempts by Ukraine to integrate into Euro-Atlantic structures.
