Hungary is again threatened with expulsion from the EU
Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn believes that the policy of the Hungarian government could cost the country membership in the European Union, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

He stated this in a telephone interview with the Hungarian publication Magyar Nemzet, which spoke with the Luxembourg diplomat after Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó called him an “idiot” who “hates Hungary.”
Earlier, in an interview with the German publication Der Tagesspiegel, Asselborn criticized the Hungarian legislative initiative “Stop Soros” and called on the European Commission to begin sanctions proceedings against Hungary.
“I don’t hate Hungary, Peter Szijjártó or Viktor Orbán. This is not about individuals, but about basic principles, values, laws and respect for human dignity in every EU member state. We cannot accept punishment for non-governmental organizations that help asylum seekers. Such methods are used only by authoritarian regimes and are unworthy of a democratic European Union,” Asselborn explained his position.
According to him, he has completely normal relations with his Hungarian colleague Szijjártó. “I have no anger that could affect our relationship. As I said, it's about principles and values. Hungarian policy challenges the principles of the European Union,” he said.
The head of the Luxembourg Foreign Ministry noted that he could not understand the thinking of the Hungarian government and warned that its policies could cost Budapest dearly.
“The Hungarian people must understand that if they have a government that does this, then the price for this may be EU membership. I would be very sad if this happened,” Asselborn said.
