Next year, Crimea will elect a Russian president for the first time – on the day of reunification

The State Duma of the Russian Federation adopted today in the third and final reading a package of laws relating to elections. They, in particular, contain a provision that if the second Sunday is a combined, post-holiday or working day due to the postponement of holidays, the voting day is transferred not to the previous one, but to the next one - that is, the third Sunday of the month. In 2018, it will be March 18 (Day of the Reunification of Crimea with Russia).

The 2018 elections will be the first presidential elections in Russia for Crimea and Sevastopol. March 18 is a public holiday on the peninsula.

The changes adopted today also concern the abolition of absentee ballots, an increase in fines for violations of election laws, video surveillance and the de-strengthening of polling stations.
