Heavy bombers and missile carriers will be stationed in Sevastopol
In Crimea, the modernization of the Belbek airfield is being completed, which, if necessary, can become a permanent base for strategic missile carriers and long-range bombers.
Izvestia reported this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the bulk of the work is planned to be completed by the end of this year, and not only the Belbek military airfield itself is being modernized, but also the infrastructure facilities that ensure its functioning.
The construction of the second runway is now being completed.
After reconstruction, Belbek will be able to receive and permanently host strategic bombers of any type in service with the Aerospace Forces: Tu-95, Tu-160 and Tu-22M.

In June 2014, by government order, Belbek was included in the list of jointly based airfields in Russia. It is planned to build an air terminal complex for passengers here.

The modernization of Belbek will seriously expand the capabilities of the Aerospace Forces in the Black Sea region, says military expert Anton Lavrov.
“First of all, we can talk about deploying the Tu-22M,” Lavrov said. – This long-range bomber is capable of carrying anti-ship missiles. The Tu-22M air group will allow more reliable control of the Black Sea and its coastal areas.”
