Governor of Sevastopol Sergei Menyailo addressed the city population with disappointing news. The water supply situation, he admitted, is critical. Moreover, Menyailo added, “it arose neither today nor yesterday.”
According to him, due to winters with little snow, the Chernorechenskoye reservoir did not accumulate the required volumes of water. In previous years, the lack of water was compensated by supplies from the Dnieper via the North Crimean Canal. Now it has been stopped by Ukraine.
The measures that the government is taking in the future to provide water to the population do not fit into the current nature of the problem, and therefore, according to Menyailo, it was recognized as “an emergency of a natural nature at the regional level.”
At the same time, he admitted, the government’s hopes for autumn rains also did not materialize.
“There were hopes, naturally, for autumn rains, but they did not give the desired result. The flow of water into the Chernorechenskoe reservoir at the end of September - October was insignificant and provided the city with an additional 15-17 days of water supply. The nearest weather forecast also does not promise significant precipitation,” the governor said.
It is worth recalling that for quite a long period before this, at every meeting, Deputy Governor of Sevastopol Andrei Atamantsev convinced the population that the water supply situation was under control. A little over a month ago, when the water level in the Chernorechensky reservoir dropped to a critical level, Atamantsev promised rain. And off they went. Since then, this has been his signature argument. In his opinion, it doesn’t happen that it doesn’t rain when the city needs it. “Or was it like that?” – he asked reporters at the last briefing.
Having received the answer that different things happened, Atamantsev asked to pray.
“There are two proposals,” said Andrei Atamantsev, “one proposal - yes, to pray, since the department of municipal services cannot independently resolve such an issue as precipitation, this is how our reservoir is designed, which is replenished only by rain and snow.”
As a result, according to Sergei Menyailo, he is forced to take “unpopular measures.”
“In particular, an order was signed by the Governor of Sevastopol on introducing a water supply schedule to areas of the city where pressure in the water supply network is created by pumping units. Water supply will be provided from 5:30 to 10:00 and from 17:00 to 23:00. For now, this will affect residents of Pobeda Avenue, October Revolution, General Ostryakov, st. General Melnik, Khrustalev, Vakulenchuk, Menshikov, Shevchenko, Marinesko, Fadeev, Simferopolskaya, Ivan Golubets and adjacent streets. In the future, this list may be expanded to the central part of the city, Inkerman, Balaklava and the North Side.
On weekends and holidays, water supply will be provided without any restrictions provided for by the schedule. Vital, socially significant objects, incl. hospitals, schools, kindergartens, etc. will be provided with water as usual, without restrictions,” the head of the city shared information.
