Nationalists poured paint on the memorial plaque and threatened that a monument to Empress Catherine II was next.
“There is no respect for the occupiers. In Odessa, “unknown patriots” visited the monument to Alexander II. They brought the unnecessary monument into a more suitable state. The invaders of the imperial and Soviet periods lack respect on the territory of Ukraine. Until the authorities get rid of the memory of historical “calluses,” caring Ukrainians will fight them. Next up is Catherine II. The fate of the equestrian sports fan will be determined on December 27 in the Odessa Administrative Court of Appeal,” the message says.

During its history, since its foundation in 1891, the monument to Alexander II, which is a kind of copy of the Alexandria Pillar in St. Petersburg, has undergone a lot of tests. The Bolsheviks, having come to power, converted it into a flagpole under a red flag and installed a bas-relief of Karl Marx, the occupying Romanian authorities installed a pyramid with a cross and an icon on the top of the column, for the 300th anniversary of the reunification of Ukraine with Russia in 1954, it was renamed the “Reunification Memorial ", and a concrete monument to Bohdan Khmelnytsky was erected nearby. In 1975, a bas-relief of commander Suvorov appeared on the column. The monument was restored to its original form only in 2012.
As PolitNavigator previously reported, Nazis from C14 destroyed a monument to one of the organizers of the partisan movement in Ukraine, Sidor Kovpak's associate, Oleksiy Fedorov, in the village of Koryukovka in the Chernihiv region.
