This was stated during a press conference by a member of the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting, fugitive Crimean Maidan activist Sergei Kostinsky, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Western Ukraine maintains absolute leadership in terms of the distribution of the Ukrainian language and songs on local and regional radio. But at the same time, the Center, East and South each year demonstrate high rates of increase in the coverage of Ukrainian-language broadcasting. The radio airwaves of Left Bank Ukraine are growing rapidly, and active Ukrainization of the airwaves is taking place.
I will emphasize: the law requires a fairly liberal percentage - 60% of the Ukrainian language in programs and 35% of songs in Ukrainian. It is local broadcasters themselves who initiate the increase and overfulfillment of these quotas. The state does not have the influence to force them to give more songs or Ukrainian-language programs.
The most valuable thing for us is that these broadcasters themselves initiate an increase in the volume of the Ukrainian language and Ukrainian-language songs. Extremely high rates are in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions – 90 and 82%, respectively. And the main conclusion: the Ukrainian language has consolidated its dominant status on Ukrainian radio in all areas without exception,” Kostinsky said.
“In any case, we see the broadcasts of all radio stations, and we pay attention to all complaints from our citizens, our listeners, who record and think that there is a violation, we always check. Therefore, if you feel that your rights are being violated on air at a radio station, officially contact the National Council.
