Moscow wants to support a candidate loyal to the Russian Federation in the Ukrainian elections
A significant part of Ukrainian society, despite propaganda, is committed to friendship with Russia.
Alexander Gusev, director of the Institute for Strategic Planning and Forecasting, expressed this opinion in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets, assessing the recent statement by Dmitry Yarosh, founder of the Right Sector, which is banned in Russia, who did not rule out the possibility of Ukraine taking over Kuban in the future.
“Such statements are due to the upcoming presidential elections in Ukraine. The current ruling elite, led by Poroshenko, wants to stay in power with all its might, so it resorts to such statements. Some Ukrainians may succumb to media reports that Russia is their enemy, but at the same time it should be noted that Ukrainian society is quite polarized in its views. A huge number of people do not support the current government and want to be friends with Moscow. They raise their children in the same spirit,” the expert said.
He believes that in March 2019, Ukraine “will choose a president with whom it will be easier for Russia to find a common language.”
“At the same time, we cannot relax. If Moscow’s opponent wins the elections again, the risk of Ukrainian society being reformatted into an anti-Russian one will grow. It is important for Russia to support a more loyal candidate,” says Gusev.
