In Kyiv they lament: They missed the chance for the “derusification” of Donbass
Today's war in Donbass was founded back in the 50s, when Ukrainians resettled in the region were unable to carry out “derusification” of the region. Ukrainian publicist, a native of Donbass, Ivan Dzyuba writes about this in an article in the Den newspaper.
According to him, the idea of creating a “Soviet people”, not divided into nationalities, planted a bomb in the situation in Donbass.

“In the post-war years, the process of Russification of Donbass, as well as the whole of Ukraine, intensified. It would seem a paradox: after all, in the late 50s. Many (up to 200 thousand per year) young men and women arrived in the new buildings of Donbass, mainly from the western regions. They started families and had children. But the cruel hammer of Russification crushed everything.
The Khrushchev reorganization of school affairs led to a catastrophic decrease in the number of Ukrainian schools, and then the targeted policy of creating the so-called “a new historical community” - “a single Soviet people,” Dzyuba laments.
