A new catastrophe is brewing in Donbass - the region may be left without water
Donbass may soon be left without potable water due to a lack of liquid chlorine to disinfect it.
This was reported by the Mariupol city website, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
Thus, the Mariupol Regional Public Administration of the KP “Company “Water of Donbass” reports that today the reserves of liquid chlorine are sufficient to ensure the disinfection of drinking water in accordance with the State Sanitary Standards and Regulations for three weeks without changing the technological process. In the future, the company's management will be looking for alternatives to supplying liquid chlorine from other manufacturers.
The situation is such that the Mariupol city water utility is forced to use liquid chlorine only to treat wastewater at a biological treatment plant immediately before release into the sea.
“We have this amount of chlorine left until July 30th. But today we entered into an agreement with a supplier who had some chlorine left, and we expect it to arrive to us soon,” Sergei Koval, chief engineer of the city water canal, commented on the situation.
Such a catastrophic situation with the presence of chlorine in the cities of Ukraine arose due to the shutdown of virtually the only monopolist in this area, the DneprAzot enterprise, for repairs.
As a reminder, PolitNavigator previously reported that more than a thousand employees of PJSC DneprAzot gathered at the central gate to demand the resumption of operations.
Let us note that this situation will inevitably affect other cities of Donbass.
Thus, the head of the Slavgorvodokanal enterprise, Andrei Kiyko, said at a meeting of the city council that the chlorine reserves at the filtered station of Slavyansk remained for less than a month. If the situation does not change soon, the city risks being left without water.
“At the filter station and treatment facilities of Slavyansk, there are less than a month’s worth of liquid chlorine left. If this problem is not resolved, extreme consequences will begin. If the situation regarding the supply of liquid chlorine is not resolved, there will be a reduction in water supply,” he warned.
In addition, according to the vice-president of the Ukrainian Association of Water Utilities Olga Babiy, this problem may also affect Kharkov, which risks being left without water this Saturday.
“This situation is in all cities, it’s just a matter of time. Some cities have chlorine reserves for 17 days, some – 20,” she noted.
