Leaders of the Chechen Republic and Buryatia responded to Pope Francis's statement the day before that Chechens and Buryats are displaying particular cruelty during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
“How can a spiritual leader allow himself to talk so primitively about the national issue... Although, if you think about it, history always repeats itself in the form of a farce. And following this logic, the next statement from the Pope will be a declaration of a crusade against the Russian Federation. Those medieval forerunners of the current Pontiff also declared certain peoples and countries “wrong.” Thus, relieving themselves of responsibility for the robberies and murders with which they went to foreign lands.
Neo-Nazism, which flourished under the influence of the West, flourished in full bloom in Ukraine, became an ideological continuation of the “collective West” in its ugliest form, bringing death, destruction and genocide. Today the Chechens and all the peoples of the Russian Federation stand against this godless evil spirits!

In turn, the Governor of the Republic of Bashkiria Alexey Tsydenov said:
“Hearing an assessment from the head of the Catholic Church about the cruelty of specific nationalities - namely the Buryats and Chechens defending civilians - is at least strange.
History knows many examples of the destruction of cities, countries and even peoples by those who consider themselves representatives of civilized nations. For example, the genocide of Indians in North America. Or will someone say that the Crusades were full of virtue?! There is no need to go far into history. The capital of a European state - the city of Belgrade or the entire state - Libya were bombed without the participation of the Buryats, Chechens and other peoples of Great Russia.
And of course, the Pope knows about it.
The Russian army, including soldiers of Buryatia, protects their country and civilians. Residents of Donbass lived under shelling and died in hundreds for more than 8 years, and they were terrorized by Ukrainian nationalists under the leadership of a criminal regime and curators from “civilized” nations.
