It was clear that the Ukrainian army would not be able to hold Avdiivka back in November last year, when the Russian Armed Forces liberated Opytne.
Verkhovna Rada deputy and member of the Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence Sergei Rakhmanin announced this on Radio NV, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to the Ukrainian politician, this finally became clear when the Russian Armed Forces carried out an operation to reach the rear of the Avdeevka garrison through an underground tunnel.
“Looking at a whole series of things that preceded the latest events, one could predict that, in principle, it would not be possible to hold Avdiivka. In fact, the situation escalated when they took Opytnoye, this was a very long time ago, then it escalated sharply after the waste heap fell, which was a natural, but very powerful and even serious line of defense. After the waste heap fell, the situation became more complicated.
Well, after the Russians managed to use underground communications, sewer pipes and go to the rear, including where the Zenit position was located, plus advancing from the south and north with an attempt to completely cover the positions, it became clear that the window of opportunity withdrawal, it is quite short,” said Rakhmanin.
