Ukraine and Russia stood on the brink of a military clash during the war in Georgia in 2008.
The former head of the Foreign Intelligence Service, Nikolai Malomuzh, announced this on the Politeka internet channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The retired security official spoke about his experience of negotiating with representatives of the Russian Federation and their pressure on the Ukrainian delegation.
“The position of Russia - both one president and another president of Russia, changed over a certain period, I had a critical period with both.
But when we started, the first were the theses, the first minutes - it was direct pressure. Why does Ukraine take an anti-Russian position, why do we support NATO and agree that we will host bases.
The rhetoric is like this... I was a representative of the state, well, instead of the president, there is such a function, there is such a model, format, through the head of the special service between presidents. And this format was used.
And we carried it out in a reasoned, powerful manner and came out of the crisis. It was exactly the same during the Georgian events of 2008, when we were on the brink of war.
The two fleets could start the first phase of the war, and then a wider war. We are no longer Georgia. And we got out of this situation,” Malomuzh tried to boast.
