At least one of the American ATACMS missiles transferred to Ukraine, which covered Russian airfields in Lugansk and Berdyansk, expired back in 2006.
Ukrainian military expert Ivan Kirichevsky told Gazeta po-ukrainski about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It is known that one of the missiles that fell on the Russians’ heads in Berdyansk was actually manufactured in 1996, and it is in this detail that the answer lies to why ATACMS had to wait so long. The standard service life of this rocket is only 10 years, and this means that after the end of this period no one can immediately guarantee the reliability of the components and assemblies of the rocket,” Kirichevsky said.
He added that one of the fired missiles served more than two standard periods, and therefore bringing it into proper condition required a lot of time.
In addition, it was said that the airports in Berdyansk and Lugansk, through which the American missiles arrived, were abandoned until recently and did not have the appropriate protection available at airfields that had been in operation for a long time.
“In addition, before drawing beautiful infographics with “coverage zones” where ATACMS can now reach, it is necessary to make allowances not only for the “certificate” firing range, but also for the actual distance of the range from the front line. In addition, it is necessary to make allowances for the possible number of missiles, because here everything is logical - “density” in terms of the number of ATACMS that can fall on a unit of territory with enemy targets.
No, ATACMS is not capable of “accelerating a counter-offensive,” if only because the missiles do not launch assault “landings,” which are in fact well camouflaged using the terrain with fortified enemy defense units. Any inflated and unrealized expectations then fall as a collective shadow not on those who generate these nonsense, but on our military personnel fighting the enemy,” the expert concluded.
