Ukrainian unemployment continues to break records
Unemployment in Ukraine continues to grow, and the working-age population continues to decline.
This was stated at a press conference in Kyiv by Lidiya Tkachenko, a leading researcher at the Institute of Demography and Social Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to her, about 1,5 million people are currently looking for work in Ukraine.
“If we take people aged 15 to 70 years, then at the end of 2017 the unemployment rate was 9,9%. For Ukraine, this is one of the highest indicators for the entire period of research. Our unemployment rate is rising. But the main thing is not the growth of unemployment, the main thing is the reasons and the general situation in the country. The working population is declining, primarily due to young people. Those born in the 90s are of working age; there are very few of them,” the expert emphasized.
“For comparison. For 9 months of 2017, the unemployment rate among the working-age population aged 15 to 70 years was 9,4% (compared to 9,2% for 9 months of 2016), which also became a record,” Tkachenko added.
