Ukraine refuses to enter into long-term contracts with Gazprom for direct gas supplies, but will allocate money to purchase the gas that traders pumped into the UGS at “low prices” several months ago.

But there are no such prices on the EU stock exchange now. The question is, where will they buy this gas? As far as I know, they will buy it from traders who pumped this gas into underground storage facilities. That is, they will buy gas that was pumped at a significantly lower price, and all losses will fall on the shoulders of consumers.
But the companies that stored gas in our gas storage facilities will have a golden margin - they bought this gas in the spring for $130, and are selling it for $560.
And why, one might ask, should the government allocate money for Naftogaz to buy gas at such a price and according to such a scheme, and right now? After all, Naftogaz could have purchased this gas in May and June. Then the price was just starting to rise, and they could buy this gas even then. But they didn’t buy it, they waited for the price to peak, and now they want to buy this gas. Why this happens is clear. We have already gone through all this many times.
It would seem that buying gas directly from Gazprom is the easiest option. Yes, Gazprom will definitely want a contract for at least a year so that they know how much we will buy it. But it is clear that the price in this case will be significantly lower, especially if the contract is concluded not for a year but for 3-5 years.
