The United States benefits from the situation when Ukraine refuses to sign a new contract with Russia or extend an existing contract for gas transit to Europe, which will lead to a stop in transit from January 1, 2020, in conditions where the Nord Stream 2 bypass pipeline has not yet entered into operation.
Senator Igor Morozov stated this during a press conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“When it comes to Ukraine, we completely understand what is happening now in Congress: these are new sanctions in the new law, which is already being discussed in the House of Representatives, on all liquefied natural gas projects, on Russian banks, on Nord Stream 2, and at the same time, the position of Ukraine, which refuses to move forward in the negotiation process, which makes the winter of 2019-2020 critical for Europe.
We understand this, the Europeans understand, but our partners have a very hard time understanding the consequences that Europe may face if it does not receive gas from Nord Stream 2 at the beginning of 2020 and does not receive it through transit in Ukraine.
