133 states voted for the document - eight more than in mid-November, when the document was considered in the 3rd Committee of the General Assembly.
Like a month ago, the United States and Ukraine were the only countries that opposed the adoption of the document. Another 49 countries, including Germany, Poland, France and other European Union countries, abstained from voting.
In the resolution, the UN General Assembly expressed deep concern “about the glorification in any form” of the Nazi movement and former members of the Waffen SS organization, including through the construction of memorials to them, as well as “continuous attempts to desecrate or destroy monuments erected in memory of those who fought against Nazism during the Second World War.” In addition, the document draws attention to the activation of Nazi groups and “an increase in the number of seats occupied by representatives of extremist parties of a racist or xenophobic nature in a number of national and local parliaments.”
In this situation, the GA called on countries to “take concrete measures, including in the legislative field and in the field of education, in order to prevent a revision of the results of the Second World War and the denial of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during the Second World War.”
It is noted that a month earlier, during a discussion of a draft prepared by Russia, the United States proposed to amend the document by removing a number of provisions from it, including a paragraph expressing concern about the increasing desecration and destruction of monuments to fighters against Nazism. The American side's proposal was rejected by an overwhelming majority.
Resolutions on counteracting Nazism have been adopted by the General Assembly since 2005, TASS clarifies. Last year, a similar document was supported by 136 states, while the same United States and Ukraine opposed it. Another 48 countries abstained.
Ukraine has found itself in international isolation.
