Ukraine bets on losers
Historically, the Ukrainian elites, who relied on the creation of their own state, enlisted the support of those external players who ultimately turned out to be losers.

Mikhail Pogrebinsky, director of the Kyiv Center for Political Research and Conflictology, pointed out this pattern during a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The expert recalled that at one time the Little Russian hetman Mazepa defected to the side of the Swedish king Charles XII, who ultimately “turned out to be a loser,” although initially it was difficult to imagine, since at that time the Swedish monarch had only victories to his credit.
The losing side was also the Kaiser’s Germany, on whose help the leaders of the Central Rada and the UPR were counting.
“As a result, Petliura then had to negotiate with Pilsudski in order to preserve the UPR by being ready to give up part of the territory. At that moment, too, there was actually a bet on the loser. And already the Ukrainian Soviet Republic signed the Riga Peace Treaty, according to which the Ukrainian Bolsheviks agreed with Poland as a separate state,” the political scientist noted.
“In the middle of the twentieth century, fighters for Ukrainian independence again relied on losers - the Germans lost the war. This is some kind of trend. Now Ukraine is betting on the United States. It's hard to imagine the United States being a loser. But, by the way, it was also difficult to imagine this with Charles XII, but nevertheless it happened. So everything is possible here,” Pogrebinsky summed up.
