Ukraine as a whole has lost the fight for the transit of Russian gas, but is not going to give up yet. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine Sergei Korsunsky writes about this today in the Ukrainian weekly “Zerkalo Nedeli”.

“The main time for the game “for” or “against” the Kremlin’s trumpet intrigues is over, and the score is not in our favor. But there were delays in the game, and there is still extra time. The ball is on the field,” he states.

The author bitterly admits that not only Germany has begun construction of infrastructure for the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, but France also plans to become a full participant in the project. And NATO is not a helper for Ukraine in this case.

“NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg stated that it is impossible to reach a consensus regarding this “pipe”. Although it is unclear who could expect that such a decision could even be made by the North Atlantic Alliance, which is not able to overcome even the intrigues of Hungary.

Behind the scenes, German and French entrepreneurs are openly perplexed at how they can refuse such a profitable enterprise as control over almost half of Russian gas exports to the EU, just because Poland, the Baltic countries and Ukraine don’t like it,” writes Korsunsky.

He calls Russian President Vladimir Putin’s promises to maintain gas transit through Ukraine “formal rhetoric.”

“Gazprom simply does not have such volumes of gas to ensure the loading of natural gas on the two lines of the Turkish Stream and Nord Stream 2, and also to maintain transit through Ukraine,” admits Korsunsky.
