Ukraine did not risk breaking off nuclear cooperation with Russia

Kommersant’s interlocutors in the Verkhovna Rada called the “international context” one of the reasons why Kyiv decided to ban Russian payment systems in Ukraine.

“In a situation where EU countries, including Germany, are discussing the possibility of introducing new sanctions against Russia over Syria, Ukraine should not behave passively. As the country that has suffered the most from the Kremlin’s policies, it must set an example to European partners and prove that the time for compromise has passed,” a Verkhovna Rada deputy from the Petro Poroshenko Bloc told the publication.

At the same time, the newspaper draws attention to the fact that there are areas in which Ukraine continues to maintain close cooperation with Russia.

“Like the Russian banking business, the Ukrainian authorities are “protecting” nuclear cooperation, in which the issue of sanctions has not yet been raised,” Kommersant emphasizes. – In this sense, Kyiv acts in the style of Washington, whose sanctions against the Russian Federation do not affect areas that are truly important for the United States. But Ukraine as a whole is much less successful in implementing this strategy; all its restrictions inevitably affect the economy and citizens of both countries and create problems for private businesses that are not directly related to the Russian authorities or the annexation of Crimea.”
