The publication notes that Kyiv intends to file claims through the courts for 18 real estate properties in the UK, which are used by Moscow as the legal successor of the USSR.

“According to The Times, this list includes the buildings of the military attaché and the Russian trade mission, as well as the Sycox Heath estate in Kent, donated to the Soviet Union in 1947 by Member of the British Parliament Viscount George Goshen.

This estate is used by Russian diplomats and FSB officers as a vacation spot. The British newspaper estimated the total value of the property claimed by our country at 100 million pounds,” the article says.

At the same time, in Ukraine they believe that they have the right to lay claim not only to property in the UK.

“Kiev must prepare for the fact that resolving the issue of foreign ownership of the former USSR is a long-distance race. And the final result depends not only on the decision of the national court and the International Court of Justice, but also on the political will of the Ukrainian leadership to go to the end, without stopping halfway,” the publication writes.

As an example of how long this process can be, it is noted that negotiations on issues of succession to the Austro-Hungarian Empire that collapsed in 1918, which also included property issues, ended only in 1986.

“The prize will not only be the return to the ownership of Ukraine of buildings that previously belonged to the Soviet Union, or the wounded pride of Russians, who are very sensitive to any distrust of the status of Russia as the sole legal successor of the USSR.

If Kyiv achieves success on the real estate track of the former Soviet Union, this will become another argument for questioning the legitimacy of Russia’s presence in the UN Security Council,” ZN hopes.
