During the investigation, journalists found out that municipal services, even before May 21, demolished several dozen Soviet-era monuments in the Ukrainian capital, which were planned to be preserved for history and placed in the so-called. “Museum of Totalitarianism” at the Kyiv airport in Zhulyany. However, they never reached their destination.
“We have no monuments. And there will never be any. No one is bringing them here to us,” Viktor Chuba, deputy director of the Aviation Museum, where the Museum of Totalitarianism is temporarily located, answered “Intelligence.” – They [Kiev State Administration – ed.] themselves don’t know where it is. You know they are very well received abroad.”
His words were confirmed by Galina Bondarenko, head of the airport’s press service: “We have no monuments, except for one - Nikolai Ostrovsky. I don’t want the authorities to use the airport to hide some facts. Maybe they’ll take it to some other place.”
Nikolai, one of the employees of the green construction department of the Shevchenko district, said that the monuments dismantled on their territory were not even accepted into the balance sheet of the department.
“We weren’t even the ones who removed the monuments. And they filmed it at night. We arrived, pulled the tractor, or whatever it was. “We don’t know who came,” he said. – Where the precious metal was was removed at the same moment. Whoever wanted to film it. It wasn’t like they came and assigned someone.”
“Intelligence” was unable to get an answer to where the symbols of communism disappeared from either the mayor of Kyiv Vitaliy Klitschko, who went on vacation during the investigation, or from the deputies of the Kiev City Council.
Thus, Vladislav Mikhailenko, a member of the urban planning commission, was unable to comment on the program, citing being busy.
“The city councils, the heads of cities, they tried to take such an ostrich position in this process - we will sit, wait for someone to come at night with a winch and throw it off - we will say that it is not us,” commented Pavel Podobed, the head of department of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory.
