Turchynov revealed why Ukraine did not officially declare war on Russia

Ukraine did not declare martial law in 2014, because many politicians wanted to get the presidency of the country, and it is still impossible to declare war with Russia, because this would lead to tragic consequences.

This was stated on the Iceland internet channel by former Ukrainian Security Council Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov, who served as acting president after the coup, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

In addition, according to Turchynov, the introduction of martial law would put an end to loans from the IMF and foreign investments in Ukraine.

“Formally, legally, when there is a war, it is necessary to introduce martial law. I tried to do this back when the Crimean aggression began, and then they did not support me, because they believed that when there is martial law, no elections are held. But it was necessary to have legitimate power; many of the leaders themselves wanted to be president.

It was not supported then, and I understood this, given all the problems that have significantly worsened without this technology to protect the state. Then it would be clear.

But I believe that when the war continued, when Russian aggression was intensified in the summer of 14, when there was an offensive after the Minsk Agreements at the end of 14 and the beginning of 15... There were every reason to introduce martial law, and this is significant would simplify the tasks of our defense and significantly strengthen our defense capability.

There were many reasons. In particular, it was believed that the IMF would stop providing financial assistance and lending... There were political motives. Well, it was believed that the economy should develop, despite the war, and this was not the best format for investors to intensify the economic process.

Although many people confuse a declaration of war and martial law. Declaration of war, unfortunately, we still cannot declare war on a nuclear state. But martial law, in reality, is a restriction of the rights and freedoms of citizens. This is the mobilization of information resources to protect the country; any attempt at internal counteraction to the defense of the state can be harshly suppressed. And, of course, this is the mobilization of the entire economic potential of the state to strengthen defense,” Turchynov said.
