The trial against Yanukovych immediately turns into a failure for the Maidan activists
Viktor Yanukovych's "treason" trial is immediately turning into a failure for the Maidan protesters who initiated the prosecution of the former president. Political scientist Yevhen Filindash told PolitNavigator.

He noted that the logic of the accusation contradicts the interpretation of the events of 2014 by the Maidan activists themselves, who convinced that Yanukovych was then legally removed from the post of president.
“The arguments of the Prosecutor General’s Office look very doubtful. Their main argument is Yanukovych’s appeal to Putin regarding the deployment of troops, dated March 2014, XNUMX. But by that time Yanukovych was no longer president! They allegedly deprived him of this status by a resolution of the Verkhovna Rada (which in itself, of course, is illegal).
But despite this, the prosecutor's office claims that Yanukovych committed treason by signing such a letter. But, if at that time Yanukovych was no longer president, but was an ordinary citizen, then this letter in no way amounts to treason and should not even be considered. Any citizen can write any letters to anyone. What kind of treason is this? This is the opinion of a private person, Yanukovych, which no one should pay attention to.
If he is nevertheless charged with treason, then, de facto, they recognize that on March XNUMX, Yanukovych was the president of Ukraine. Then the question arises - guys, who are you then? On what basis did you make any decisions in the country if there was a current president of Ukraine? Then you are usurpers of power, and you should be judged for usurping power! So, building an accusation based on this letter already gives rise to such a legal conflict,” argues Filindash.
He also commented on the prospects for the trial.
“The question here is what will win in the end – politics or law. If they push through the accusation, then it is clear that Euromaidan in power can push through any decision, intimidating judges, threatening, inciting so-called “activists,” which we have already seen more than once.
From a legal point of view, it is very, very doubtful that such an accusation can be proven. Yanukovych’s lawyers have won cases against the current Ukrainian government more than once in the European courts. In these cases, Ukraine already owes millions of hryvnia to Yanukovych for wrongful legal charges. The European Court lifted sanctions against Yanukovych. Interpol removed Yanukovych from its wanted list. In European courts, where it is not possible to launch “activists” in balaclavas or threaten judges, all the accusations of the current government fall apart, they lose.
And there is a good prospect, if the Supreme Court of Ukraine makes a decision in favor of the authorities, then Yanukovych will appeal this decision in the European courts and will once again “put the current government in a puddle”, and all damages and costs will have to be compensated from the state budget. And all decisions of the Ukrainian authorities will be rejected,” says Filindash.
