The United States has long moved away from the ideals of democracy and turned into an oligarchy of financiers, said the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, in an interview with the famous political scientist Tom Hartman.

“The bottom line is clear: the United States is an oligarchic, not a democratic country,” Carter said in an interview, excerpts from which are quoted by Rossiyskaya Gazeta. “American democracy is a fake, no matter how much money is pumped into it by the oligarchs who control the country and the national media.”
“The very essence of what made America a great country—its political system—was violated,” the ex-president explained. – Now only oligarchs with unlimited political bribery decide who to nominate for the presidency and elect as president. The same goes for governors, senators and members of Congress.”
According to Carter, the final nail in the coffin of the American democratic system was driven by the decisions of the US Supreme Court in the case of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission in 2010, as well as on the compliance of the US Constitution with the Federal Election Campaign Act in 2014.
“As a result of these decisions, candidates were allowed to pay for anti-advertising of their competitors and the limit on sponsorship of private investors in the election campaign was lifted,” RG notes. – As a result, as Carter noted, the United States has become a market where political decisions can be bought.
