Dispute in the State Duma: Should we announce early elections or deal with the economic war first?
The upcoming referendum on approving a new Russian Constitution is a pretext for early State Duma elections. United Russia MP Alexander Karelin announced this at a parliamentary session, according to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The Constitution, changes to which we will vote today, if they are adopted at the all-Russian vote on April 22, it gives us great powers. It is obvious that the president proposes to increase the role of parties, to strengthen the role of the majority of our population through representation in parliament and the Federation Council. Therefore, I believe that it would be fair to hold new elections under our new opportunities,” Karelin said.
The United Russia initiative was supported by the head of the LDPR faction, Vladimir Zhirinovsky.
“The LDPR will support amendments to the Constitution. If the updated Constitution comes into force in April, then elections to the State Duma must be held ahead of schedule. And the head of state can be chosen by the State Council,” he said in his blog.
However, Nikolai Kharitonov, a deputy from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, objected to early elections.
“The global economic war is raging. The coronavirus is raging across the country. I should probably stop. First, let's go through all these problems, and then we will raise questions. So that we can all be together, together,” said the communist.
