The current Ukrainian government is pursuing an overly soft policy towards national minorities. Decisive steps are needed, such as closing the Hungarian consulate in Ukraine.

This opinion was expressed on air by the Zik channel by People’s Deputy and active member of the Svoboda VO Andrei Ilyenko, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“It seems to me that the Hungarian consulate should be liquidated, not just expelled. We don’t need a consulate that does this (issuing Hungarian passports to residents of Transcarpathia - author’s note). This will be a good lesson for people who do not respect Ukrainian laws, Ukraine and its sovereignty. These are not just unfriendly actions, they are disrespect and spitting in the direction of Ukraine. The reaction must be harsh. I think that the fact that Hungarian passports are being distributed in Transcarpathia is far from news. This is a well known thing that has been going on since the 90s. Let's remember that in 2015 there were even official statements by the rulers of Hungary, who said that 95 thousand Hungarian passports had been distributed to Ukrainians, residents of Transcarpathia. I think this number has only increased since 2015. This is definitely more than a hundred thousand. It’s clear, let’s remember what we had in Crimea and Donbass: when annexation and war began there in 2014, before that all this had been prepared there for many years. In particular, preparations were made through the distribution of Ukrainian passports. Let’s remember Crimea, how they were distributed there. Now events are taking place in Transcarpathia according to the same pattern. Why is this happening? Because the government does not fully protect national interests, I would say that it does not do this at all, it does not take strong tough steps. I am convinced that when there is a strong patriotic government in Ukraine, our relations with Hungary will immediately improve,” Ilyenko said confidently.
