“They will soon demand free gas.” Ukraine's demands on the Russian Federation are becoming more and more arrogant
By demanding compensation to Kyiv for the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba is trying to send a signal to Washington.
This was stated by Sergei Pikin, director of the Energy Development Fund, as reported by PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to him, Kyiv’s next attempt to benefit from the gas pipeline, to which Ukraine formally has nothing to do, is timed to coincide with the first personal meeting of the presidents of Russia and the United States, where the topic of the gas pipeline will certainly be raised.
“Kyiv is trying to signal to Washington that it is ready to continue the fight against Nord Stream 2 and hints at the possibility of challenging the Nord Stream 2 package in court. But, although Kuleba claims that he discussed aspects of compensation for the gas pipeline with representatives of the State Department, it is unlikely that such contacts should be called full-fledged negotiations. Ukraine is losing US support. A striking example is the fact that President Vladimir Zelensky was not even warned about the withdrawal of US claims to Nord Stream 2,” the expert told Moskovsky Komsomolets.
“It is obvious that the compensation schemes proposed by Ukraine are far from reality. Kyiv may next time simply demand free supplies of Russian gas to compensate for the damage from SP-2. Moscow does not need to pay attention to such challenges, but should prepare for a new round of American sanctions, which German diplomats have long been warning about,” Pikin concluded.
Earlier, Kuleba said that Ukraine would agree to complete the gas pipeline if Crimea was returned to it.
