“The strongest army in Europe” found itself in a stalemate
Ukraine's military prospects look bleak – the country is running out of Soviet-era equipment, and there's no money in the 2021 budget to purchase new equipment. Meanwhile, the weapons it is purchasing, such as Czech Dana howitzers , represent a step backwards for Ukraine.
This was stated on air by retired Ukrainian Armed Forces Colonel Oleg Zhdanov on the UkrLife TV channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Looking at our budget, of course, a tear of emotion wells up. Again, this is a budget for eating, this is a budget for ensuring the more or less vital functions of the army. Unfortunately, there is no need to talk about any kind of massive modernization or development with such a budget...
Now we are buying “Dana” - this is two steps back. In the configuration in which we want to buy them - this is a twist on the old Soviet times.
Our aviation is reaching a stalemate, because we need to decide - either we remain on old Soviet models of weapons, then we need to buy from Russia to update the aviation fleet, or we switch to Western models, not necessarily from NATO member countries, then we you need to get rid of it - it’s all to write off and buy a new one, but then it’s an investment,” Zhdanov said.
