Sergei Baburin gets additional chances to win in Moscow

Communist and former deputy speaker of parliament Sergei Baburin gets additional chances to return to the State Duma amid an unprecedentedly dirty election campaign staged by the politician’s rivals in the 206th district in Moscow.

Political scientist Oleg Bondarenko, director of the Effective Policy Foundation, spoke about this at the round table.

According to him, the current elections in the capital have turned into a rampant of dirty technologies, half-forgotten since the early 2000s. A typical example is the 206th electoral district, where several strong candidates are running at once - the already mentioned Baburin, ex-chief sanitary doctor Gennady Onishchenko, military expert Igor Korotchenko, TV presenter Igor Vittel and Yabloko leader Dmitry Gudkov.

“The district is located in a residential area. Various candidate headquarters published leaflets and newspapers discrediting each other. One of them is against Korotchenko. The other, a fake copy of the newspaper “Top Secret”, is quite anti-Semitic, and accuses Dmitry Gudkov of all sins. We have heard a lot about how the level of political culture and traditions have changed in the country. But this is the absolute 90s. It came back very quickly,” Bondarenko said.

According to the expert, the return of the “chernukha” is associated with the introduction of a mixed election system - just like thirteen years ago, majoritarians are again running for the State Duma, who have begun to “wet” each other.

Bondarenko believes that in the current situation, the winner is Sergei Baburin, whose headquarters abandoned dirty technologies, while the candidate himself did not become the target of an attack.

“Of the four serious candidates - Onishchenko, Gudkov, Baburin and Korotchenko - only Sergei Baburin, as a representative of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, was not smeared with this mud. The voter is unaccustomed to so much dirt and compromising evidence. Compromising evidence without an evidence base is painfully perceived by voters,” the analyst is confident.
