Georgian politicians who declare Russia an “occupier” know little or deliberately distort history, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a visit to Yekaterinburg.

“Ossetia became part of the Russian Empire in 1774. She entered completely. Both the southern and northern parts. As an independent state. Abkhazia - in 1810. Also like an independent state, like a principality.

Later, events began to occur within the framework of a single state. The southern part of Ossetia became part of the Tiflis province. There was no Georgia.

Abkhazia developed in this way. When the Russian Empire collapsed after the First World War, Georgia attempted to absorb Abkhazia.

An independent Georgian state was formed. And with the help of German troops in 1918, Georgia occupied Abkhazia. The occupiers behaved very harshly. Georgian troops acted even more harshly in Ossetia in 1919 and 1920. Essentially speaking, this is exactly what is called genocide today.

All this would be good for today's Georgian authorities to know. We must not forget about this if today's Georgian authorities want to improve relations with the people of Abkhazia or South Ossetia.

And during the times of the USSR, by the way, the first contractual Union Soviet Socialist Republic of Abkhazia was formed. Which included Georgia. It wasn't even Georgia. During the time of Stalin, the Socialist Republic of Georgia was created, of which Abkhazia was an integral part. And our human rights activists never pay attention to this. But on the instructions of Stalin, the NKVD Beria took very tough measures against the Abkhazians. Very tough - with the goal of absorbing this territory and the Abkhaz people into Georgia.

This difficult legacy was ignored by one of the first presidents of modern Georgia when he abolished all autonomy altogether - of Adjara, Abkhazia, and so on. All this led to an explosion and fratricidal war.

I once warned Saakashvili and said: Mikhail Nikolaevich, under no circumstances allow any military action against Abkhazia and South Ossetia. He told the Americans the same thing. “Yes, yes, under no circumstances.” And what did they do? No, we went there with the war. The result is known today. Russia was simply forced to recognize the independence of these republics and protect the people,” Putin recalled.
