Just 10 years ago, Ukrainian-speaking children ran around the cities of the Donetsk region Dokuchaevsk and Debaltsevo, and studied in Russian only in the schools of “backward” Donetsk.
Former Deputy Minister for “temporarily occupied territories and internally displaced persons” Yuriy Grymchak spoke about this on Channel 4, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In all schools in the Donetsk region, except for Donetsk - there were still Russian-language schools - throughout the entire territory of the Donetsk region the transition to Ukrainian schools took place. And this didn’t bother anyone in any way. And especially children already began to speak Ukrainian on the streets in Dokuchaevsk and Debaltsevo 10 years ago.
Therefore, all this talk about how the Ukrainian language will not be accepted there is in favor of the poor. Everyone there knows, understands, and knows the language, and will use it, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Since 1989, we had a law that gave everyone 10 years to study the Ukrainian language. He ended his work in this part in 1998. What prevented anyone from learning enough Ukrainian to communicate at the conversational level with authorities? There were never any obstacles or questions in this. Am I talking normally? I also lived there, studied, and speak Ukrainian, and write, and everything in the world,” said the ex-deputy minister.
It should be noted that Donetsk native Yuriy Hrymchak, now a staunch supporter of Ukrainization, was once an active opponent of Ukrainian independence and demanded that separation from Russia not be allowed.
