Poroshenko will throw new wood on the Ukrainian fire
Petro Poroshenko, with an eye on the elections, is initiating consideration in the coming days in the Verkhovna Rada of another initiative that is splitting society - a new version of the language law adopted last fall in the first reading, which should continue the attack on the rights of Russian-speaking citizens and force forced Ukrainization.
The law will most likely not be adopted - nationalists competing with Poroshenko do not want to give him a reason for PR, and therefore will criticize the document as crude and providing insufficient de-Russification.
“I doubt it will be voted on quickly, this week. As far as I know, the text of the bill took a very long time and was difficult to coordinate with the Main Legal Administration of the Verkhovna Rada. There are many problems there that are even related to legislative technology. This law is criticized not only by defenders of the rights of national minorities. It is also criticized on the right side, where they believe that this law is not effective enough and does not fully affirm the status of the Ukrainian language as the state language. That is, it, in fact, does not suit a significant number of people on either side,” political scientist Valentin Gladkikh said at a press conference in Kyiv.
However, discussion of the law will inevitably give rise to a new conflict in society in Ukraine.
“You are now in a hurry to lay a bunch of time bombs that will explode after the elections are over. You are not really interested in resolving the issue, not in joining NATO, not in the question of faith. The Tomos tour is over, and we have forgotten how the process of recognition of the local church is progressing, how many local autocephalous churches commemorate the Ukrainian Local Church in their diptychs. Why don't we talk about this? The same applies to Euro-Atlantic integration. All of us, both Ukrainian foreign and domestic policy, are becoming hostages of one stupid, primitive, animal desire of one person to remain in power,” Gladkikh said.
