The ban on Russian social media , search engines, and email services imposed by the Ukrainian president's decree today shouldn't be of particular concern to users, as bypassing the block on resources deemed unsuitable by the Kyiv regime won't be particularly difficult.

Thus, the Kyiv online newspaper "Strana" published detailed instructions on how to bypass website blocking and compiled a list of the most popular methods.

A VPN (virtual private network), when used to bypass censorship, is a way to spoof your location, pretending to be from a country where the website you're looking for isn't blocked. This provides the user with a secure channel with encrypted data transfer. Browser extensions or plugins for your browser work with this technology.

For example, we use Chrome.

We go to the extensions directory through the browser settings button.

There we write VPN and the catalog will offer extensions that work using this technology.

Select the one you need and click “install”. For example, we chose the first one from the list - it turned out to be ZenMate. Install it in the browser.

The plugin will prompt you to register using email, and will then appear in the extensions panel.

By default, our traffic went through Romania, but by clicking on the extension icon, you can select any other country from the list.

Another similar extension is hola! One of the disadvantages is that you need to manually select the VPN of the desired country. Also, the plugin often disrupts the layout of blocked pages, making them difficult to read. However, according to publishers, it is better suited for viewing media content: it uses other users' computers with the plug-in installed to speed up loading of streaming video.

There is also a service called TunnelBear. It is available on iOS, Android, PC and Mac and also works with VPN technology. It is more difficult to install it on mobile platforms. So, on iOS, it first asks you to register, confirm your email, create a profile with VPN settings, enable its profile in iOS options, and only then start working.

A proxy server is a server that acts as an intermediary: you trust it to retrieve the information you need for you. You contact the proxy server, which requests the information from a blocked resource and then transmits it to you. In the simplest case, a proxy server is designed as a regular website where you enter the address of the resource you need.

Among such services are Hideme, Ninjacloak, ProxFree, Proxyweb, Hide My Ass, Proxfree.com, Stealthy.co. The way they work is very similar: they usually just require you to copy a link into a line on your home page. The disadvantage of such services (as well as most other methods) is that pages load much slower, and sometimes videos or music are completely impossible to play.

The Tor browser is an anonymous virtual network that transmits encrypted traffic, guaranteeing complete anonymity. The browser offers a wide range of advanced settings to ensure maximum anonymity.

Software running on each TOR participant's computer helps forward packets from other participants. Any request you make will be encrypted and transmitted from one TOR user to another a certain number of times and then sent to its destination. After which the user will be returned a response. No one except the first and last node will know where the request was addressed, or what information was requested.

Browser Turbo Mode. In the Opera browser, simply enable Opera Turbo in the settings, which will help bypass restrictions.

Mobile devices

Experts say that mobile applications (VKontakte, Odnoklassniki, etc.) should work without restrictions, because they are not tied to a domain name.

As an alternative, for iPhone and iPad users there is the Onion browser, which runs through the Tor routing system, where traffic is almost untraceable. The only thing required from the user is $1 for the universal version for all Apple platforms. For Android there is an analogue called Orweb, as well as OrBot and Puffin Web Browser,” the publication writes.
