Kyiv, February 22 (PolitNavigator, Vladimir Raichenko) – The denouement of the confrontation in Debaltsevo showed the depressing state of both military and political thought in Kyiv.
This assessment of the battle was given at a press conference in Kiev, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent , by Ruslan Bortnik, director of the Ukrainian Institute for Policy Analysis and Management.

“The military operation in Debaltsevo is, of course, a tragedy that demonstrated the terrible state of the military-political thought of the Ukrainian leadership,” the political scientist is sure. “Junior and mid-level commanders are afraid to take responsibility and make a decision on the withdrawal of troops, despite the obvious cauldron and the fact that OSCE representatives could not get into these territories other than through separatist checkpoints. But junior commanders are afraid that they will be made scapegoats, and the senior leadership uses only the logic of political expediency, when the symbol of the Debaltsevo bridgehead is more important for ratings than an absolutely reasonable decision to withdraw troops and level the front line.”
