If the initiative of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to hold a referendum on joining NATO comes true, it will only deepen the division of the country.

Political scientist Andrei Ermolaev stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The president’s next initiative to hold a referendum on joining NATO took place like a ritual. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that this initiative was voiced in a situation where a decision on Donbass was postponed, and there was virtually no policy regarding Crimea, which, as a result of annexation, became part of the Russian Federation.

The topic of a referendum on NATO on a limited territory of Ukraine, with the participation of only that part of the population that is located only in controlled territories, may become a point of no return to that united, integral Ukraine that is being talked about so much. Roughly speaking, this is a signal of a split. Moreover, this signal came from the head of state. The conclusion is clear - an attempt to implement a referendum on NATO, regardless of how society is now inclined, can lead to irreversible processes of farewell to Donbass. This is a signal of formalizing a split with Donbass,” Ermolaev emphasized.
