Poroshenko wants to “anchor” NATO in the Ukrainian Constitution

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko intends to initiate the introduction of a provision on joining NATO into the Constitution of Ukraine.

He stated this today at a press conference in Kyiv, a Politnavigator correspondent reports.

“In my team we are currently discussing a proposal to anchor European and Euro-Atlantic integration in the constitution. When anti-European forces that crave revenge raise their heads, amendments to the fundamental law could become insurance against any surprises and an imperative for any political forces for years to come. The desire for membership in the European Union and NATO could be recorded in the preamble of the Constitution,” Poroshenko said.

He claims that these ideas will consolidate the Ukrainian people. Voting in the Verkhovna Rada on security-related laws gives the president “cautious optimism.”
