The introduction of passport control aims to establish a border between the eastern regions, the French news agency believes.
“However, the passport regime forms an internal border, highlighting the rebels’ success in separating the two self-proclaimed small states located around Donetsk and Lugansk,” AFP said.
Ukraine has already lost control of its real border with Russia, which is controlled by the rebels.
“In another sign that the Ukrainian government has given up on regaining control of the eastern part of the country,” the news agency reported, “Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said he was ending subsidies and social benefits, including pensions, for rebel-held areas.”
Cuts in social payments will lead to a significant reduction in funds received by the regions where the power of the DPR and LPR is established. According to Yatsenyuk, AFP writes, the abolition of subsidies to the rebel areas of Donetsk and Lugansk will add about $2,4 billion a year to the rest of Ukraine.
AFP believes that all the prerequisites exist for the unfolding of a new Cold War and the construction of a new “Iron Curtain”.
According to the French agency, Polish Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna also stated this.
