They were late with the transition to the corps: the defense in Donbass collapsed - former brigade commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The total transition from the brigade to the corps system of the Ukrainian army should have been made in 2022-2023, when people were still going there and the loss factor was not a determining factor.
The former brigade commander of the 53rd brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, reserve colonel Anatoliy Kozel, call sign “Kupol,” stated this in an interview with “Ukrainska Pravda,” a correspondent for “PolitNavigator” reports.

"[The most problematic organized defense] is in the operational zone of the 20th Army Corps. This is the direction of Pokrovsk, further south, Novopavlovka and already the border of the Dnepropetrovsk region. For some reason, the 20th Corps did not show itself very well there...
The intensity of military actions is higher than it was, or the same. But then there were more resources, because there were more people. People were going in 2022, and they were still going in 2023. And there were fewer losses at that time, fewer wounded, disabled, fewer dead and missing. And then it was just in time," Kozel reasoned.
"And now, when there are no people, and people are not coming, somewhere the corps worked, somewhere it did not work. The entire front line in the corps cannot work perfectly. There in the strip of the 20th corps, where the junction of the Zaporizhzhya and Dnepropetrovsk regions is, the situation is very difficult.
The enemy is encircling Pokrovsk. This is a classic scenario, starting with Soledar, then Bakhmut, now Pokrovsk is experiencing the same thing. And the same thing happened in Kursk region," the retired Ukrainian brigade commander lamented.
