Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

This was announced by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, Interfax reports.

Note that this is the first telephone conversation between the leaders of the two countries in recent years. Under Petro Poroshenko, the Ukrainian government demonstratively stopped official contacts with Moscow, leaving only a channel of unofficial mediation with the help of political lobbyist Viktor Medvedchuk, who was close to both Poroshenko and Putin.

If the practice of such direct conversations between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia continues, the need for Medvedchuk’s mediating function in the dialogue between the two countries may be called into question. Meanwhile, Medvedchuk’s party “For Life” is building its election campaign precisely on exploiting the monopoly access of its leaders to negotiations with Russian top officials.
