There will be no reforms: Zelensky appointed Saakashvili for other purposes - expert
The appointment of Mikheil Saakashvili as head of the executive committee of the Ukrainian Reform Council does not mean that he will actually be involved in reforms. His function is to represent the Ukrainian government in the West and, perhaps, serve as an “icebreaker” for Zelensky in domestic politics.
This was stated by the director of UIAMP, Ruslan Bortnik, on the air of the Capital channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“He was not appointed there for this, because today, in a crisis, in a budget deficit, there can be no reforms. There are no resources for them, no circumstances for them to carry it out.
Today, on the contrary, we have the opposite process - the curtailment of medical reform, modification of educational reform. Therefore, I think that this is just a beautiful position so that Saakashvili can fulfill the main task of the president.
The main task that most likely faces him, as far as I understand and people who are closer to this process say, is the representation of Zelensky’s team abroad. Saakashvili’s position should be correctly called “special ambassador of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Western countries and in communication with creditors.”
Here is Saakashvili's function. In the West, he is considered one of their own, and this function will be assigned to him. Zelensky has problems with the West. After the resignation of Goncharuk and Ryaboshapka, after the purge of the General Prosecutor’s Office commission for personnel selection, we see how all the grant-eating structures are now screaming.
There is a problem with the West, the level of mistrust is increasing. After this national turn in personnel policy, this whole story with Shmygal, with Venediktova, it seems to me that they simply advised the president: take Saakashvili, he communicates well in the West, he has an image there, he will help us somehow with a picture balance in the West. This, it seems to me, is the main function.
The only thing I still don’t understand is what are Saakashvili’s internal functions, is he allowed to speak inside? If he is allowed to speak inside, then he can be a VIP speaker of the authorities and an “icebreaker” for Zelensky: where it is inconvenient for Zelensky to attack someone, he can set Saakashvili on.
If Saakashvili is not allowed to speak internally, his function will be exclusively foreign diplomatic,” concluded Ruslan Bortnik.
